Students and Experts to Explore Developments in Education & Culture

The Window on Tomorrow Youth Symposium is a unique and vital segment of the Media Innovations Summit which we are opening to Bay Area parents and educators with a separate admission pass. Experts in youth culture and cutting-edge education concepts will present their findings on how technology is influencing the lives of young people in entertainment, communications, social networking and education. Most important, middle school, high school and college students will participate in a lively discussion with the experts to reveal their own usage patterns, responses to new educational ideas and sense of how their peers are adjusting to this new world.

Speakers share new research examining young people’s engagement with online entertainment, social networking and new modes of learning and how those usage patterns are impacting their lives and education progress. These experts will also present new concepts in education support that go beyond long-standing e-learning tools to facilitate classroom instruction in an era of stringent restraints on education resources.

Students from grades 7 through college sit with the symposium’s experts to discuss how their personal experiences are tracking with the research and to offer their responses to some of the new educational ideas presented in the previous session. The discussion will probe young people’s views on the pros and cons of today’s connected-life culture; the viral paths that are proving effective in fostering peer group responses to new content, gadgets and websites; what they’re looking for from providers of premium entertainment, and how online resources are affecting their learning experiences.

Integrated Educational Strategies is a consulting firm dedicating to helping educators transition from the concept of a Blended Model program to an evaluation of the program after its first year. In addition, IES provides the support throughout the entire process to ensure the Blended Model program is a win for students, teachers, and administrators.

Lisa Gillis is a lifelong educator, reformer and advocate who has held key positions from the local to national levels ranging from classroom teacher to virtual school administrator, charter school developer, board member and parent. She co-authored “Virtual Schooling:  A Guide to Optimizing Your Child’s Education” (published by Macmillan in 2009), and co-wrote the 2009 and 2010 iNACOL “Keeping Pace” reports. As project lead of the Digital Learning Council (co-chaired by Governor Bush of Florida and Governor Wise of West Virginia) Gillis worked with the nation’s top innovators to design the Digital Learning Now roadmap as the “constitution” for the digital revolution.
